SPSS Overview

SPSS means Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. It is statistical software used for data entry, cleaning, descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, regression, survival analysis, and presenting results in tables and figures. The official current major release is IBM SPSS Statistics version 31; IBM describes version 31 as the latest release with new algorithms and product enhancements. (ibm.com)

Steps to Convert Data from Excel to SPSS

  1. Open SPSS
  2. Click File
  3. Click Open
  4. Click Data
  5. Change file type to **Excel (.xls, .xlsx)
  6. Select your Excel file
  7. Click Open
  8. Tick Read variable names from the first row of data
  9. Choose the correct Excel sheet
  10. Click OK
  11. Check Variable View
  12. Correct variable names
  13. Correct variable type
  14. Correct decimal places
  15. Add variable labels
  16. Add value labels for categorical variables
