What is a Cross-Sectional Study?

A Epidemiology Cross-Sectional Study is an observational study design in which exposure and outcome variables are measured simultaneously at a single point in time.

In this study design:

• Participants are assessed once
• Data are collected during a defined time period
• Exposure and outcome are evaluated concurrently

Cross-Sectional Studies are commonly used to determine:

• Disease prevalence
• Risk-factor distribution
• Health behaviors
• Population characteristics
• Associations between variables

Unlike cohort studies, Cross-Sectional Studies do not follow participants over time. Unlike Case-Control Studies, participants are not selected based on disease status.

Cross-Sectional Studies are widely used because they:

• Are relatively fast
• Are relatively inexpensive
• Require less follow-up
• Are useful in public-health research
• Help generate research hypotheses
